Center Overview

EBIRE is a nonprofit research institute that administers basic and clinical research approved by the Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS). The EBIRE-VANCHCS collaborative approach provides over 420,000 Veterans with the opportunity to participate in research.

EBIRE Mission Statement
To promote research approved by the Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System by providing resources in which investigators may conduct safe, quality research.

EBIRE-VANCHCS Aims

  • Promote research relevant to the health of Veterans
  • Provide Veterans with access to clinical trials
  • Conduct high quality research in a safe, effective manner
  • Apply basic science knowledge to an understanding and treatment of diseases
  • Seek opportunities which will allow investigators to conduct patient oriented research
  • Develop collaborative relationships with individuals, groups, and research communities

Clinical Research Experience

Established in 1989, EBIRE has received research support from major pharmaceutical sponsors and CROs, the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, State of California, charitable organizations, and the general public.

Located in two cities, EBIRE-VANCHCS research is conducted in Martinez and Sacramento, California.

The Martinez Campus hosts a 120-bed facility which offers several extended care services including rehabilitation, restorative care, transitional care, and a neuro-cognitive unit. Also located in Martinez is an outpatient clinic, offering a full range of medical, surgical, psychiatric and diagnostic outpatient services. The clinic also operates a freestanding ambulatory surgery center and provides services such as audiology and speech, pathology, vascular laboratory, women's health clinic, substance abuse treatment program, and amputee clinic. Also located on campus is the UC Davis-Alzheimer's Disease Center and VA Aphasia Center.

The Sacramento campus maintains twenty medical/surgical beds, four ICU beds and five 23-hour stay observation beds. The new VA medical center is under construction and scheduled to open mid-2003. Two floors of the new medical center are dedicated for research use, including a 8,500 sq. ft. General Clinical Research Center with metabolic kitchen and wet lab space of 14,800 sq. ft. Adjacent to the Sacramento Medical Center, the Clinical Trials Research Center (CTRC) celebrated its grand opening in February 2000. The Center provides research investigators with over 6,300 sq. ft. of space which includes 6 exam rooms, wet lab space, refrigerator/freezer room, core space, conference room, and administrative space

Facility Description

Our Martinez campus is located just 30 minutes from San Francisco. Our Sacramento campus serves patients along the I-50 and I-80 corridors. Shuttle service is provided between the two centers.

Investigator Experience

EBIRE's investigators hold dual appointments with the Veterans Affairs and University of California, Berkeley or Davis. Studies are often conducted in Martinez and Sacramento simultaneously, allowing maximum enrollment potential.

Staff Expertise

EBIRE's experienced data managers provide quality information on a timely basis to Sponsors.

Patient Demographics

EBIRE is affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), who serves over 420,000 Veterans dispersed over approximately 40,000 square miles.

Other Information

The VANCHCS maintains its own IRB. EBIRE-VANCHCS may not use a central IRB for research conducted at its sites.
