Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, is southeast Georgia's only teaching and research hospital. Located about 30 minutes from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, and just minutes from Interstate highways I-95 and I-16. The 612-bed hospital is the regional referral center for approximately 450,000 people in southeast Georgia and South Carolina. The center offers the full range of tertiary services with the exception of a burn unit and a transplant service. Some of the referral services include a Level 1 Trauma Center, open-heart surgery, high-risk obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric intensive care, pediatric cardiology, pediatric hematology/oncology, adolescent medicine, radiation oncology, sports medicine, rehabilitation services, and diagnostic radiology services.

Memorial Health University Medical Center also has a surgical training lab and is well-equipped to conduct clinical trials. The lab maintains a refrigerated centrifuge and a minus 70-degree C freezer for processing and storing pharmacokinetic samples.

Staff

The Department of Clinical Trials at Memorial Health University Medical Center is staffed by a research manager, biostatistician, a regulatory document specialist, data manager, an investigational pharmacist, and six clinical research nurses or coordinators, many of whom are certified clinical research coordinators (CCRC) or certified oncology nurses (OCN).

The Dept. of Clinical Trials partners with many other hospital departments to ensure the smooth coordination of clinical trials throughout the system. Nurses and technologists in the intensive care units, cardiac catheterization lab, radiology, tumor clinic, neonatal nursery, and other hospital units work closely with the research staff, and their unique knowledge and expertise contribute to our ability to efficiently coordinate trials in a diverse array of specialties.

Patients

MHUMC draws on populations from 35 counties in two states. The patient population spans all ages and socio-economic groups. The local region is highly diverse, making Memorial Health a great source for study samples investigating disparity issues. Due to the mild climate, there is a large population of retirees. There are two military installations and four colleges/universities in the area, so there are many young individuals and families. Our geographic location also sees higher than average prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers.

Other

Investigators and sponsors interested in conducting research at MHUMC’s have the option of using our local Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), or utilizing a central IRB of their choosing..
