Facility Description

Northern Pines Health Center, PC offers a spacious practice setting built by Dr. Mitzie Hewitt in 2004. The Research Division conducts Phase II-IV outpatient clinical trials. Presently we have seven exam rooms, two procedure rooms, and a laboratory for other in office diagnostic testing.

Investigator Experience

Our Principal Investigator is Northern Pines Health Center’s Medical Director, Mitzie Hewitt, DO, CPI.

Dr. Hewitt is board certified in Family Practice. Dr. Hewitt has been practicing medicine in the greater Traverse City area since 1999. In 2010, Dr. Hewitt was certified by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals as a Certified Principal Investigator. In her determination to stay on the cutting edge of research, she attends the annual conference held by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals along with other continued educational opportunities.

Dr. Hewitt employs three Sub-Investigators and three full time Study Coordinators.

Staff Expertise

April Kurkowski, DO has been working with Dr. Hewitt in Family Practice as well as clinical trials since 2015. Dr. Kurkowski is a board certified Family Practitioner and has been working in the greater Traverse City area since 2009.

Heidi Szerlong, MPA, PA-C, RD has been working with Dr. Hewitt in Family Practice as well as clinical trials since 2015. Heidi has previously worked in both cardiology and internal medicine practices. She has a background as a Registered Dietitian starting in 2001 until she transitioned to her physician assistant career.

Alex Cooper, NP-C has been working with Dr. Hewitt in Family Practice as well as clinical trials since 2016. Alex has previously worked as a Registered Nurse in a hospital setting as well as Medic/EMTwork with the US Army.

Karla Blackmer, CCRC has been working with Dr. Hewitt and clinical trials since 2006. In 2010 she was certified by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals as a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator. To stay up to date on industry trends she attends the annual conference held by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals along with other continued educational opportunities. As the lead study coordinator she specializes in study start-up, regulatory document processing, and study coordinator management.

Lydia Baker, CRC has been working with Dr. Hewitt in clinical trials since 2014. Lydia specializes in respiratory indications and works diligently to maintain our high subject retention standards. She is scheduled to sit for the Association of Clinical Research Professionals certification exam in the Spring of 2017.

Sarah Sherman, CRC has been working with Dr. Hewitt in clinical trials since 2015. Sarah specializes in our Type II Diabetes Mellitus studies and has proven to be an asset in subject recruitment and marketing.
