Facility Description

Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) is the flagship hospital of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS). EMMC is a comprehensive 411-bed medical center located in Bangor, Maine and has served communities throughout central, eastern, and northern Maine for more than a century. The medical center and its medical staff of more than 500 physicians provide three-quarters of the hospital services offered in the Bangor area, and is the specialty referral hospital for the northern two-thirds of the State, providing leading-edge programs in cancer, surgery, cardiac care and tele-health services among many others.

EMMC also provides outreach clinics to many local hospitals in the region, allowing easier access for patients and supporting the role of those hospitals in their communities. EMMC is an American College of Surgeons verified Level II trauma center and host of LifeFlight of Maine, a statewide medical helicopter service that transports critically ill and injured patients.

The medical center is currently undergoing a major modernization effort. Among the many improvements that are being made to EMMC is implementation of Cerner Smart Room™ technology in all new patient rooms under construction, with plans to add this technology to current rooms over the next few years. Features of the Smart Room include: Instant bedside access to real-time device data; Smart infusion pump technology management; Bi-directional communication between medical devices and the EMR; Automated mobile vitals that capture with the EMR; Secondary alerting for clinical notification and escalation; Interactive patient console; Electronic signage outside the patient room; and Real-time tracking to manage assets, providers and patients.

EMHS is a vertically integrated healthcare system serving all of the State of Maine. It is comprised of more than 30 organizations, including nine hospitals. EMHS offers a broad range of health delivery services and providers, including: acute care, medical-surgical hospitals, a free-standing acute psychiatric hospital, primary care, specialty physician practices, long-term care, home health agencies, and emergency transport services. The EMMC Clinical Research Center supports all EMHS members.

EMMC has an electronic medical record system, which makes data abstraction and trial pre-screening more efficient.

IRB Information

The EMMC Clinical Research Center utilizes Central IRB’s for industry sponsored clinical trials and a local IRB for investigator initiated projects.
