Summary: SAFE STEPS: Combined Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Women with PTSD

This research study offers women with alcohol dependence and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a combination of medication (Sertraline - trade name: Zoloft) and 12 weeks of individual one-hour psychotherapy sessions with trained clinicians. In addition, participants will have weekly appointments with a psychiatrist during study participation. If you participate, there is the opportunity to receive up to $165.

The treatment provided is FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.

Patient Inclusion Criteria

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Females between the ages of 18 and 65
  • Current alcohol dependence
  • Current posttraumatic stress disorder
  • Using English as your primary language

Patient Exclusion Criteria

Exclusion criteria include:

  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Allergic reaction to Sertraline
  • History of seizures
