Trial Information

Summary: A Family Study for Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients and their Healthy Relatives

A National Institutes of Health funded nationwide study is being conducted in Denver, Colorado; in Seattle, Washington and on Long Island. The Long Island recruitment is directed by Dr. Peter K. Gregersen at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore LIJ. Both the patient with rheumatoid arthritis and his or her family members (parents, siblings or children over 18) who do not have RA, are invited to take part in this study. No medication or treatment is given as part of this study. The goal is to learn about the possible causes of rheumatoid arthritis both genetic and environmental. The genetic information is obtained by analyzing a blood sample from both the patient with RA and their relative(s). Questionnaires are used to gather data on the possible environmental factors that may trigger or aggravate the disease. Each participant is compensated $25 for time and travel.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Be willing to provide a blood sample
  • Have one or more first degree relatives (parent, brothers, sisters, or children over 18) WITHOUT rheumatoid arthritis, who are willing to provide a blood sample
