Trial Information

Summary: SWOG S0333: A Phase II Study of Double Induction Chemotherapy for Newly Diagnosed Non-L3 Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Investigation of Minimal Residual Disease and Risk of Relapse Following Maintenance Chemotherapy

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) that has not been previously treated and you are under the age of 65.  Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a quickly progressing disease in which too many immature white blood cells called lymphoblasts are found in the blood and bone marrow.  The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcome of ALL treated with anti-leukemia drugs combined in a so-called “double induction” regimen.  The double induction regimen will consist of a first induction of the following cancer drugs: vincristine, danuorubicin, prednisone and PEG-L-asparaginase, while the second induction will be with high-dose cytarabine and mitoxantrone (All these drugs are commonly used to treat acute leukemia’s).  The study doctors also hope to learn about the gene patterns in subjects with ALL at the time of diagnosis and relapse (reappearance of the leukemia).  Finally, the study doctors also hope to find out if they can detect small numbers of cancer cells in subjects who achieve complete responses (no evidence of disease) after their treatment and to learn if the presence of those cells predicts whether the ALL will relapse.  Your participation in this study is expected to last a maximum of 2 years and 9 months for treatment and approximately 5 years for follow-up.
