Summary: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor for Treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF2) in patients with diabetic neuropathy). We are also trying to determine whether VEGF2 will lessen the symptoms and nerve injury of diabetic neuropathy, particularly the loss of feeling in the legs or feet.
Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • be at least 21 years of age
  • have Type I or Type II diabetes requiring oral medication or insulin
  • have symptoms of symmetric distal neuropathy

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • have any serious disease that will prevent you from participating in the study for one year
  • have a history of drug or alcohol abuse within 3 months of the study
  • have any evidence or history of cancer within the past 5 years
  • have had successful re-vascularization surgery on the leg that is to be treated
  • have been diagnosed with moderate to severe proliferative retinopathy
  • are pregnant or lactating
  • have an amputated great toe (or a great toe compromised by an ulcer) in the limb that is to be treated
