Trial Information
Summary: Study comparing Anastrozole vs. anastrozole and fulvestrant for post-menopausal women with metastic breast cancer.
The Dyson Center for Cancer Care at Vassar Brothers Medical
Center in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and
Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) is conducting the SWOG – S0226
Research Protocol.
This is a Phase III randomized trial of Anastrozole vs.
Anastrozole and Fulvestrant as first line therapy for
post-menopausal women with metastatic breast cancer.
Endocrine therapy plays a central role in the treatment of
metastatic breast cancer. Essentially all patients with metastatic
disease eventually develop resistance to these agents, the goal of
endocrine therapy in breast cancer is palliative. The most widely
used endocrine therapy over the last two decades has been
tamoxifen. Over the last decade new agents have been developed
including the aromatase inhibitor, anastrozole, and the pure
anti-estrogen, fluvestrant. The important question in clinical
trials is if the combinations of these new agents might have
advantages over the use of single agents.
Eligibility criteria:
- Metastatic breast cancer.
- Postmenopausal.
- Positive hormonal assay of tumor.
- Prior chemotherapy/hormone therapy/immunotherapy for recurrent
or metastatic disease are not
eligible.
