Trial Information
Summary: NSABP Protocol B-39/RTOG 0413: A Randomized Phase III Study of Conventional Whole Breast Irradiation (WBI) Versus Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI) for Women with Stage 0, I, or II Breast Cancer
You are being asked to take part in this study because you have breast cancer and have had a lumpectomy to remove the cancer. Studies have shown that giving radiation therapy to the breast after lumpectomy helps keep cancer from coming back in the breast. The purpose of this study is to see if partial breast irradiation (PBI) is as good as whole breast irradiation (WBI) in keeping cancer from coming back in the breast. Additional purposes are to compare the two treatments in terms of overall survival, cancer-free survival, cosmetic results, fatigue and other treatment-related symptoms, convenience of care, and immediate and long-term side effects. Your participation in this study is expected to last 5 years.
