Summary: Study of standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy before allogeneic stem cell transplantation

The goal of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is the eradication of the abnormal cell population by administration of myeloablative chemoradiotherapy and restoration of normal hematopoiesis or metabolic function by transplantation of donor stem cells.

Patients must fulfill the following criteria:

• Firm diagnosis by standard clinical and/or pathological criteria (one of the following):
  • CML - Typical blood marrow morphology and the presence of Philadelphia chromosome (or molecular evidence of bcr/abl rearrangement in Philadelphia chromosome-negative patients.
  • AML, ALL, lymphoma, histiocytoses, MDS, aplastic anemia, and Fanconi's anemia - Typical morphology in blood, marrow , lymph node or other tissue and confirmatory cytochemistry, immunophenotyping, and/or chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Multiple Myeloma - Typical marrow morphology, radiographic findings, and paraprotein.
  • Hereditary immunodeficiency disorders - Characteristic clinical features and confirmatory immunologic determinations.
  • Sickle cell anemia and B-thalassemia - Typical blood morphology and confirmatory hemoglobin electropheresis.
  • Storage disorders (e.g., Gaucher's disease, Hurler's disease, metachromatic leukodystrophy) - characteristic clinical features and confirmatory metabolic testing
• Patients need to have a donor who is an identical twin, HLA-identical family member, or 1 or 2 HLA locus mismatched family member.
