Trial Information

Summary: COG AALL0232: High Risk B-Precursor Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

You have/Your child has been asked to participate in this research study because you have/your child has been recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (aLL). You have/Your child has leukemia that is classified as high risk because your/your child's initial white blood cell count is over 50,000, and/or you are/your child is ten years of age or older. There are several purposes for this research study: 1. To improve the cure rate of children with high risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia. 2. To find out if using dexamethasone instead of prednisone can improve survival rates without causing more serious side effects. 3. To find out if using high doses of methotrexate instead of lower doses with an escalating schedule can keep the cancer from returning without causing more serious side effects. 4. To see whether the speed with which subjects respond to initial therapy (disease remission) and how well they do following treatment can be linked to the presence or absence of very small numbers of leukemia cells in the bone marrow on Day 29 of treatment. If you/your child is female, therapy will last around 21/2 years. If you/your child is male, therapy will last around 31/2 years because males require longer maintenance therapy. Routine follow-up examinations will be done at various times after you have/your child has completed therapy. In addition, general follow-up information will be obtained on your/your child's health status once a year throughout your/your child's lifetime.
