Summary: Clinical study for Schizophrenia
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one out of
every 100 adults suffers from schizophrenia, a serious brain
disorder. More than two million Americans suffer from
schizophrenia, with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions,
disordered thinking, social isolation/withdrawal, and depressive
symptoms such as flat mood.
A nationwide clinical study is seeking volunteers diagnosed with
schizophrenia. Participation in the study involves 28 outpatient
visits over two years, including visits every 6 months to an
ophthalmologist, and includes FDA-approved investigational study
medication and study-related examinations and health
assessments.
Inclusion Criteria
Volunteers must:
- Be age 18-65, male or female
- Have a clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia, as confirmed by
DSM-IV criteria
- Be clinically stable enough to be treated in an outpatient
setting and able to cooperate with eye examinations every six
months
- Be of stable residency for at least three months prior
- Have both eyes and their respective lenses intact
- If treated with mood stabilizers or antidepressants for other
psychiatric symptoms or disorders, been on stable dosage for at
least one month prior to study entry
Exclusion Criteria
Volunteers must not:
- Be pregnant, or planning a pregnancy
- Be diagnosed with any DSM-IV Axis I disorder other than
schizophrenia
- Have a history of narrow-angle glaucoma, cataract
extractions/lens absence, corneal surgery, or significant eye
trauma
- Be legally blind or have significant eye disease requiring
treatment
- Have been treated for eye injury or eye disease within the
previous 30 days
- Exhibit current evidence of advanced cancer, HIV, and/or liver,
renal or heat disease
