Summary: Raising the Xerostomia Threshold by Pretreatment with Amifostine

Staten Island University Hospital is currently recruiting subjects to participate in a research study to increase the Xerostomia Threshold by Pretreatment with Amifostine in patients with metastatic head and neck cancers.

Study drug and procedures will be made available to you at no additional cost.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Are receiving external beam radiation for the treatment of metastatic head and neck cancer if the parotids were to be included in both lateral fields.
  • ECOG Performance Status <= 2

You do not qualify if:

  • You are receiving chemotherapy to treat your malignancy.
  • You have been treated with any investigational drug(s) <= 4 weeks prior to study entry.
  • You have a general medical or psychological condition which would not permit the patient to complete the study or sign the informed consent form.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You are currently receiving or have received Amifostine for radioprotection within the previous six months.
  • You would be treated with external radiation to only one parotid gland.
