Trial Information
Summary: Pre-diabetes: Are you at risk?
At least 16 million people in the United States (15.6% of the
population), ages 40 to 74, have pre-diabetes. Washington
University School of Medicine is conducting a research
study that can give you vital information regarding your personal
health. You will be compensated for time and travel. Trial lasts up
to 12 weeks, or six visits. Participants will need to have
transportation to Barnes-Jewish.
The overall purpose of this study is to determine the impact of
depression on insulin resistance (IR) in diabetes. Insulin
resistance characterizes type-2 diabetes (T2DM) and is a predictor
of diabetes complications, particularly coronary heart disease
(CHD). CHD, in turn, accounts for more than 50% of deaths and 75%
of hospitalizations among diabetic patients. The findings from this
study could identify a potentially modifiable factor for improving
the course and outcome of those living with T2DM.
If depressed, the participant will be treated with cognitive
behavioral therapy ("a form of counseling or talk
therapy") or usual depression care. If not, participants will
not have counseling, but will be asked to complete several
questionnaires and undergo testing for risk factors.
Inclusion Criteria: Ages 18-80, first
generation family history of diabetes, obesity, uni-polar
depression, gestational, birth to baby weighing at least nine
pounds, high blood pressure, anxiety, heart disease. Also, you are
at higher risk if you fall into one of these categories; African
American, Asian American, Native American, Pacific Islander,
Alaskan Native, Hispanic.
Exclusion Criteria: Bi-polar depression,
schizophrenia, diagnosed Type 2, advanced kidney or heart
disease.
