Trial Information

Summary: Assessing Cognition: Interactive Voice Response System

This study will assess whether measures of memory changes collected by an Interactive Voice Response system (or IVR) provide similar information to clinical evaluations. Since clinic visits can be inconvenient and expensive, we are interested in learning if some of these evaluations can be done from your home using a touch-tone phone. The convenience of answering questions from one’s home will make it easier for clinicians and researchers to detect small changes in memory. Early detection of memory loss is very important to the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease. A system that can detect small changes in memory can alert physicians and patients before memory loss is severe. Early detection of memory loss will allow people to take advantage of medications aimed at slowing the progression of disease.

Over a 6-month period, both of you will be asked to make phone calls to a toll-free number from a specific study telephone that will be given to you. Also, you will both be asked to come into the Stanford/VA Aging Clinical Research Center for memory assessments by our clinicians. In appreciation for your time, study partners and study subjects will be offered a total possible compensation of $250 per person.

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Have mild, very mild, or no memory loss
  • Are age 65 or older
  • Speak English
  • Have a study partner who can attend 4 clinic visits
  • Can use a telephone with no or minimal assistance
