Trial Information
Summary: Patients under 21 years of age with bone sarcoma sought for research study.
The Cancer Center at the University of Virginia Health System invites patients who are younger than 21 years old and diagnosed with neuroblastoma to participate in a research.
The purpose of this study is to determine if low-risk patients can be treated with surgery only, thereby avoiding the side-effects of chemotherapy without lowering their chances of survival. In the past, many children with low-risk neuroblastoma were automatically treated with surgery and chemotherapy, but recent experience indicates that chemotherapy might not be needed at all.
Participants will have surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible. If more than 50% of the tumor is removed, participants will be observed for recurrence or progression of the disease. If less than 50% of the tumor is removed, participants will be treated with chemotherapy and possibly radiation. Please note that this is an information-gathering study only. Participants will receive the care recommended as best by their cancer doctor. No experimental treatments are given. However, participants be followed with physical exams and diagnostic tests (blood, MRI/CT scans, bone marrow tests etc.) to watch for signs of tumor re-growth. The participants insurance company will be billed for the costs of the medications, procedures, and tests. There will be no financial compensation for participating in this study.
