Trial Information
Summary: Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Patients with Hematological Malignancies Using Multiple Unrelated Cord Blood Units
Patients eligible to participate in this study will be asked to consider a research consent form which includes the following information: You have/your child has been asked to participate in this research study because you have/your child has a malignant disease of the bone marrow that is unlikely to be cured with standard non-transplant treatment. Transplants have the best result when the donor is a relative who has the same tissue type (HLA type). You/your child do not have such a donor available. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of umbilical cord blood (UBC) cells from two unrelated donors as a source of stem cells. Stem cells are immature cells that can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The main purpose of this study is to determine how well cord blood from two unrelated donors will grow after transplantation. This study will also determine the side effects that may result from a transplant using cord blood from two unrelated donors. Your/your child's treatment on this research study is expected to last approximately 6 months. After treatment is over, your/your child's medical condition will continue to be followed indefinitely. Bone marrow transplantation from HLA-matched siblings (sister or brother) (allogeneic BMT) has been used successfully in the treatment of high risk or recurrent leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. For certain forms of cancers, such as diseases of the marrow or lymphatic system (system that circulates lymph, which contains white blood cells), stem cell transplantation may offer the only treatment with potential cure.
