Summary: Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT)
The Queens Cancer Center of Queens Hospital Center in
conjunction with the Southwest Oncology Group and sponsored by the
NCI (National Cancer Institute) is participating in a 12 year
national study designed to test the effectiveness of Selenium and
Vitamin E in the prevention of prostate cancer. This is the largest
prostate cancer prevention study ever undertaken. Approximately
32,400 men at more than 400 sites throughout the United States are
expected to participate. Selenium and Vitamin E were selected for
this trial because of their demonstrated anticancer activity in two
other large-scale cancer prevention trials.
You may be eligible to participate in the above study if
you:
- Are age 55 or older (or age 50 or older for African-American
men)
- Have never been diagnosed with prostate cancer or any other
cancer except non-melanoma skin cancer in the last 5
years
You may not participate in the above study if you:
- Are taking anticoagulant therapy (Coumadin)
- Have a history of stroke
- Have a history of retinitis pigmentosa (progressive
degeneration of the retina of the eye)
You will not be compensated for your time, however, all FDA
approved research study medication will be provided at no cost to
you.
