Trial Information
Summary: Hyperpolarized Helium-3 MR Lung Imaging Findings in Asthmatics. HIC #: 8559
This research study evaluates how air moves through the lungs of
people with asthma. To do so, we will use magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) to look at an Investigational New Drug which is a
special helium gas (called hyperpolarized helium-3) as it goes
through the lungs during breathing. We hope to learn more about
asthma by watching air moving through the lungs. In the future this
may help us tell whether someone has asthma, decide whether
medications are working, or determine when someone is likely to
have an attack of asthma.
You will complete a questionnaire about your medical history and
any lung problems. You will also have a chest x-ray, a physical
exam, spirometry, an electrocardiogram (ECG), a urine test and a
blood test before the MRI. These tests, except for the chest x-ray,
will be repeated immediately after the MR scan. The MR imaging
session can be expected to be between 1 and 2 hours.
You may be eligible if you have asthma and you are between 12
and 35 years old. You should not participate in this study if you
are pregnant, or if you have any metal splinters or shards in your
body or any other reasons that could interfere with the MRI
scanning.
