Summary: Vascular dementia study
Patients with dementia due to vascular disease in the brain will
be studied to test the effects of a new investigational drug
treatment. Patients must be between the ages of 50 and 85, have a
diagnosis of vascular dementia, be in generally good health, and
have a caregiver who will participate in the study with them.
Each patient in the study will be randomly assigned to receive
either the new drug treatment or placebo and will be followed for 6
months. There are a total of 7 visits to the clinic. Patients and
their caregivers will answer questions and take tests to measure
change in memory, other cognitive functions, activities of daily
living, quality of life, and psychological symptoms.
Patients who participate in this study will receive without
charge:
- Full diagnostic evaluation including MRI scan
- Investigational study medication
- EKG, laboratory tests, and physical examinations
Patients who complete the study will be eligible to receive
open-label treatment with the new drug treatment for up to a
year.
