Summary: Study investigating how well antidepressant response is maintained over periods of one year in patients with major depression
This study which has been funded by the National Institute of
Mental Health, includes people with major depression and
investigates how well antidepressant response is maintained over
periods of one year. All participants will receive treatment with
Prozac (fluoxetine) for 12 weeks on an open-label basis, i.e.
without anyone receiving placebo. Individuals who respond well to
this treatment will be randomly assigned to either continue it for
a follow-up period of one year or switch to placebo, under
double-blind conditions. Any relapse of depression during the
follow-up period will be treated with appropriate antidepressant
medication. Nonresponders to Prozac will receive alternate
medication. A minimum of six months treatment is provided for all
participants. All treatment and medication during the study is
provided at no cost.
Eligible participants must be in generally good physical health,
must not have had any previous manic episode or psychosis, and must
be free of alcohol and drug abuse for six months prior to entering
the study.
