Responses to Stress/Pain in Parents and Children Study
Participate in a Research Study on how Children and their Parents Respond to Safe, Laboratory Stress/Pain Tasks.
Your child may be eligible if:
- He or she is between 12-17 years old
- He or she is not being treated for pain OR
- Having chronic or recurring abdominal pain. Children with abdominal pain must be referred by his/her gasteroenterologist/healthcare provider
Participation involves the child and his/her parents coming to UCLA for one research session to answer questions about your health, including experiences with pain and other bodily symptoms, mood, and views about how different people respond to stress/pain. These questions will take about 1 hour to complete. Participants will also experience 2 safe, lab, stress/pain tasks.
If the child and both parents participate, the session lasts about 3 1/2 hours. If the child and one parent participate, the session lasts about 2 1/2 hours.
Researchers will monitor child and parent responses to brief lab pain tasks (i.e. hand in cold water, drinking non-carbonated filtered water until one feels completely full). These tasks are quick and the participant may stop them at any time. A sample of your saliva (spit) will also be taken to analyze for stress hormones. Parental consent is required for participation in the study.
Children will get a $30 gift-certificate
Parents will get $20 for traveling expenses
