Summary: Men and Women ages 18 to 55 who have recently torn a knee ligament and have thigh muscle weakness needed for a research study.

UVa Health System, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports Medicine Division seeks men and women ages 18-55 who have recently torn a knee ligament (anterior cruciate ligament) and have thigh muscle weakness for a research study.

The purpose of this study is to determing the effectiveness of cold therapy and electrical therapy to help regain thigh muscle strength. You are being asked to be in this study, because you have a knee ligament injury and may or may not be scheduled for reconstruction surgery.

The study involves one screening visit lasting about 1-2 hours. Eligible persons will be randomly assigned to receive 2 weeks of supervised thigh muscle exercise therapy or no therapy. There are a total of 4 supervised exercise sessions each lasting about 1 hour. A follow-up visit lasting about 1-2 hours will occur following the 2 week intervention period.

Study-related sessions are provided free of charge.
Compensation for study completion is $50.00.
