Trial Information
Summary: Adults with Multiple Myeloma Sought for Research Study.
The University of Virginia Health System Cancer Center seeks adults with multiple myeloma for a research study. The purpose of this research is to study an investigational medication called perifosine and to see if the use of perifosine is safe or effective when it is combined with another drug, bortzomib (Velcade). All participants in the study will receive perifosine to be taken by mouth and bortzomib, to be given intravenously 4 days per month in the UVA Cancer Center Clinic. This treatment will continue for 6 months if the participants myeloma is not worsening and there are no intolerable side effects; thereafter, participants have the option of choosing to continue the treatment if the study doctor feels it is in their best interest. Participants will have an end of study visit to the UVA Cancer Center within 8 weeks after their receiving their last dose of the study drug. Participants will undergo the following tests before and during the study: an activity evaluation, physical exams, urine and blood tests, a pregnancy test if applicable, xrays, ECGs, and a bone marrow biopsy. The sponsor will pay for treatments and procedures related to the study. The participants insurance company will be billed for the costs of standard of care (or usual for treatment of your multiple myeloma) treatments, procedures, hospitalization, physician charges, and tests. There will be no financial compensation for participating in this study.
