Summary: A research study for patients with symptoms of overactive bladder due to spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis

If you have a spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis, and suffer from overactive bladder, you may qualify for the Dignity Study – a medical research study.

Living with urinary incontinence, you’ve no doubt developed coping skills. For some people, that means carrying an extra set of clothes with them in case of an accident. Others cope by drinking less liquid, putting themselves in danger of dehydration. Still others simply stay home while some people, if they feel free to leave the house, only go where they can quickly access a bathroom.

For most people with spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis, nerve damage results in an overactive bladder causing frequent incontinent episodes. Standard treatments such as self-catheterization are highly inconvenient and may cause health problems such as urinary tract infections. Other current treatments often have a high incidence of side effects (such as dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision) or are highly invasive.

If you have a spinal cord injury or have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and have not had success managing your incontinence with medication, we invite you to find out if you qualify for the Dignity Study. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness and safety of an investigational medication, for controlling symptoms of overactive bladder in patients with these conditions. In a previous medical research study, this investigational medication reduced the frequency of urinary incontinent incidents in spinal cord and multiple sclerosis patients.

Physicians in your area are conducting the Dignity Study. Qualified participants will have had a spinal cord injury or have multiple sclerosis, experience frequent incontinent episodes due to an overactive bladder, may be using self catheterization to control their bladder, and are looking for alternative treatment options. Potential participants will be evaluated to further determine their eligibility. Investigational study medication, medical exams, and lab tests will be provided to qualified participants at no charge.

Study inclusion / exclusion criteria

• You must be between 18 – 80 years old
• Have been diagnosed by your doctor with overactive bladder at least 3 months ago
• Have a spinal cord injury at the T1 level or below or have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis
• Weigh at least 50 Kg or 110 lbs.
• Be willing and able to record information regarding bladder function onto a paper diary (provided)
• Be willing and able to complete the entire course of the study
