Summary: Malignant Melanoma Study CSTI571BUS255

Novartis Oncology is supporting a clinical study that is being sponsored and conducted by Dr. F. Stephen Hodi of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to find out if the study drug imatinib mesylate (GleevecŪ) is safe and effective for people, 18 years of age or older, who have metastatic acral lentiginous melanoma which is a form of skin cancer that commonly appears as a dark patch on the palms, soles, fingers, toes, under fingernails or toenails, or mucous membranes. GleevecŪ has been approved for the treatment of certain types of cancers, however it is not approved for metastatic acral lentiginous melanoma.

Participants will be asked to visit the study center a predetermined number of times over the course of a one year period.
