Summary: Herpes Zoster (Shingles) Rash

The purpose of this research study is to find out how well valomaciclovir works for treating shingles compared to valacyclovir (Valtrex™). Valtrex™ is a currently approved medicine on sale in the US for shingles.

Study drug and study procedures will be made available to you at no cost.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have signs and symptoms consistent with acute herpes zoster disease
  • Have zoster associated rash present within 72 hours prior to enrollment in the study

You will not qualify if you:

  • Are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • Have a history of significant metabolic, hematological, pulmonary, ischemic or unstable heart disease, gastrointestinal, neurological, psychiatric, renal (kidney failure), urological, endocrine (organs that regulate growth and development), ophthalmologic (including severe retinopathy), or disease including HBsAg (HEP B) positive or HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a retrovirus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
  • Have chronic genital herpes
  • Previous vaccinations against herpes zoster (HZ)
  • History of alcoholism or drug addiction within 6 months prior to screening
