Summary: Citalopram challenge test in women with and without Premenstrual syndrome

Healthy women ages 21-45 with regular menstrual periods with and without premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are wanted for a 4 month UCLA Research Study of hormone response to a medication called citalopram that increases the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. You must not be on hormonal contraception or medications for PMS.

Study entails:

  • Nightly mood rating forms
  • Two 4-hour visits to the Clinical Research Center (CRC) to receive the citalopram throught an intravenous catheter.
  • Blood testes taken from an intravenous catheter.

Risks of these procedures are those relating to having the intravenous catheter inserted into the arm (bruising and rarely infection) and a small amount to nausea, dizziness, or sleepiness lasting for up to a few hours related to the study medication citalopram. Citalopram is used to treat depression as well as premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

There are not benefits related to participating in the study. If you are eligible, you'll be paid up to $220.00 for your time.
