Summary: The Effect of Prolactin on Lactation

The purpose of this study is to treat healthy women with prolactin deficiency who wish to breastfeed. Mothers with prolactin deficiency from previous pituitary surgery, radiation, Sheehan’s syndrome or unknown causes will receive recombinant human prolactin to induce lactation. Mothers must be 18-45yrs old and may not be taking oral contraceptives or have had previous breast surgery. This study involves three 8 to 11hr admissions, 4 outpatient visits, administration of prolactin and blood draws. A stipend of up to $120 will be provided.
