Did you suffer from a HEART ATTACK OR CHEST PAIN in the past 1-3 months?
PET Scan
Check if you are eligible to participate in a new Drug trial monitored with Non-Invasive Imaging.
Who can participate?
You may be eligible for this research study if: - You have had a heart attack or Chest pain 1-3 months ago. - You are 18-75 years of age. - You are not pregnant or nursing a child. - You have no history of allergy to CT contrast dye or iodine. - You have normal kidney function. - You do not have poorly-controlled diabetes.
You do not have to participate in this research study to have treatment for your heart disease.
Interested? Speak with your doctor about participating or call Dr. Tawakol at (617) 726-9292.
The division of cardiology is conducting a research study to determine the efficacy of an Investigational New Drug, VIA-2291 on reduction in inflammation of plaques in patients suffering from heart disease with the help of PET/CT scanning and blood tests.
The drug has not yet been approved by the FDA for use in the US. However, animal and preliminary studies in humans have not demonstrated any significant side effects of the drug at the doses at which it shall be given during the study.
PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a scanning technique that yields information about biology while CT (Computed Tomography) uses x-rays to obtain a detailed picture of body structure. PET-CT is a non-invasive scanning technique that combines a PET scanner and a CT scanner. We hope that in future, this drug shall reduce death and disease in patients suffering from heart disease.
Typically you need 9 visits during which: 1) We will review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and obtain urine and blood samples. 2) We will perform PET and CT scan of your carotid Arteries and heart*. This requires that a radioactive tracer be injected prior to the PET scan, and a contrast dye injected before the CT scan.
You will be compensated $100 for each imaging visit day, plus parking fees. In rare cases, we may need to perform PET and CT scanning on separate days. In that case, you will be compensated $100 for the additional imaging visit.
*Scans may be performed in a combined PET-CT scanner or separately.
