Trial Information
Summary: Metabolic Effects of Switching from Kaletra to Boosted Reyataz
In this research study, HIV-infected individuals will be randomized (assigned by chance) to either stay on Kaletra or switch to boosted Reyataz (Atazanavir) over a 6 month period. Our aim is to determine whether switching from Kaletra to boosted Reyataz results in improvements in sugar metabolism, fat redistribution, and cholesterol levels. Techniques involved include CT, DEXA, MRI, and dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) imaging combined with insulin clamp (a test that measures how well the body stores sugar when stimulated by a dose of insulin).
Eligibility Criteria:
- HIV+ individuals aged 18 - 65 years
- Stable antiretroviral regimen containing at least 2 NRTIs (nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors) AND Kaletra for a minimum of 6 months
- CD4 count greater than 400 cells/cubic mm
- Metabolic complication of one of the following: high insulin levels, high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels, or current treatment with a lipid (body fat)-lowering agent
