Trial Information
Summary: Want to Quit Smoking?
The purpose of this study is to assess the value of nicotine
patch therapy in combination with nicotine-free cigarettes as a
step toward quitting smoking successfully. Conventional FDA
approved nicotine patches will be used.
This study consists of 1 physical screen and 7 visits over a 12
week period. The physical will take approximately 2-2½ hours and
includes a drug screen. If you test positive for illegal drugs you
will not be eligible to participate. The 7 visits will each last
approximately 45 minutes and will take place between 9AM and 5PM
Monday through Friday. If you complete all laboratory visits you
will be compensated up to $140.
If you pass the physical screen, we will ask you to come in for
your 1st visit about 5-7 days later. At this visit you will receive
a supply of nicotine patches and cigarettes without nicotine. You
will be asked to only use our supplies for the next two weeks. You
will also be asked to set your quit smoking date 2 weeks from the
date of your 1st visit.
After your quit date, you will continue to wear the study
nicotine patches but not smoke any type of cigarette. After 6 weeks
we will gradually lower your nicotine patch dosage.
All seven study visits will have the same format. We will
measure the carbon monoxide in your breath, collect a saliva sample
and take your heart rate and blood pressure.
