Summary: Upper extremity stroke rehabilitation using stochastic resonance stimulation
Stroke Rehabilitation Study - Patient Information
Title of Study: Upper Extremity Stroke Rehabilitation Using Stochastic Resonance Stimulation
Location of Study: Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MA.
Researchers: Joel Stein MD at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is conducting the study. Afferent Incorporated makes the experimental device used in the study.
Purpose of Study: The purpose of the study is to find out whether vibration and electrical stimulation (“stochastic resonance stimulation”) helps people recover arm movement after a stroke.
To be eligible for this study you must be:
•At least 18 years of age.
•6 months or more after a stroke.
•Able to pick up and drop a washcloth with your weaker hand.
Procedures: We will ask you questions about your medical history and examine you to find out how well you can move your arm. You will exercise your weaker arm with a therapist 3 times a week for 4 weeks. You will wear 2 electronic devices that stick to your arm while you exercise. Some people in the study will just exercise. Other people will exercise and also have the experimental vibration and electrical stimulation treatment.
Time Commitment: 17 days, 1-4 hours on each day, over the course of 2 months.
Risks: If you have sensitive skin you should not volunteer for the study. The exercise therapy might make you tired or cause muscle soreness.
Reimbursement: You will be paid $150 if you attend all appointments.
