Summary: High Cholesterol at High Risk for Coronary Heart DiseaseVolunteers with Metabolic Syndrome (see below for definition) and High Cholesterol at High Risk for Coronary Heart Disease

This study is for patients with metabolic syndrome and hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) at high risk for coronary heart disease. Metabolic syndrome is a group of health problems that include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol. Together, this group of health problems increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of one drug compared to another. The study involves two drugs that are already approved for treatment of high cholesterol. If eligible, you will receive one of the two research medications. You will be compensated for your time and travel expenses.

Inclusion Criteria: To be eligible for the study patients must:

  • Be male or female 18 - 78 years of age
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Be at risk of Coronary Heart Disease
  • Willing to maintain a cholesterol lowering diet for the duration of the study
