Summary: Healthy Women ages 18-30 with regular menstrual cycles for research study.
UVa Health System Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation seeks healthy women ages 18-30 with regular menstrual cycles for research study.
The purpose of the study is to determine if levels of the hormone hepcidin vary according to stage of the menstrual cycle. Hepcidin is involved in the regulation of iron levels in the body. The study involves 3 visits to the General Clinical Research Center at the University of Virginia Medical Center (8th floor) during one menstrual cycle. During each visit, you will undergo a blood draw. You will bring a first morning urine sample with you to each visit. You will be paid $50 if you complete the study. You must meet the following criteria:
1. You are a female aged 18-30 years with regular menstrual cycles of 28-30 days.
2. You do not use hormonally based contraception, including: birth control pills, nuva ring, norplant, depoprovera, etc.
3. You are not pregnant.
4. You do not have any condition which is known to affect iron metabolism, including hemochromatosis, anemia of chronic disease, or liver disease.
5. You have not had any illness with fever in the 2 weeks preceding the beginning of the study.
