Summary: Study Evaluating the Efficacy and Safety of Dexmedetomidine in the Prevention of Postoperative Delirium in Subjects Undergoing Heart Surgery with Cardiopulmonary Bypass

People who are undergoing a heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass and having general anesthesia are asked to participate in a research involving a drug that will be given during the surgery to help with postoperative delirium. This study is being conducted by Montefiore Medical Center.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Are having heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass

You may not participate in this study if you:

  • Are pregnant/ breastfeeding or intend to become pregnant during the study
  • Are expected to have multiple surgical procedures within 72 hours of start of drug infusion
  • Have participated in another research study within the last 30 days
