Summary: Brief Hypnosis for Treatment of Painful Peripheral Neuropathy in HIV-infected Patients

The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of hypnotherapy (a form of guided meditation) in relieving the pain of HIV-associated neuropathy. We will also try to find out whether hypnotherapy can also help relieve other problems which people with neuropathy often have, such as depression and anxiety. There are a total of 9 visits over 17 weeks, which includes 3 hypnotherapy sessions.
Compensation Provided

Patient Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:

Documented HIV infection, Diagnosis of HIV-Associated DSP for a period of at least 28 days prior to entry, has been on a stable treatment for HIV-DSP for at least 56 days prior to entry, has been on a stable medication regimen for treatment of HIV or other medical conditions for 28 days prior to entry.

Another medical condition that would make diagnosis of HIV-associated DSP uncertain. Examples of such a condition are severe arthritis, stoke, and spinal cord injury. Participation in an experimental protocol for DSP within 90 days of entry into the study.
