Trial Information
Summary: SWOG S0226 "Phase III randomized trial of anastrozole versus anastrozole and fluvestrant as first line therapy for post menopausal women with metastatic breast cancer"
Eligible patients will be randomized into one of two study groups: Arm 1 Anastrozole crossover to fulvestrant Arm 2 Anastrozole and fulvestrant
The purpose of this study is to find out what effects (good or
bad) the combination of hormonal agents anastrozole and fulvestrant
have over anastrozole alone on the patient or the breast
cancer.
690 women will take part in this study.
Patient Inclusion Criteria
- Patients must be female with a pahtologically confirmed
diagnosis of mestatic breast cancer or multiple sites of new
disease that is clinically obvious mestatic disease
- Patients must be postmenopausal
- Patients must have measureable or non-measureable disease.
- Patients must be ER and/or PR positive.
Patient Exclusion Criteria
- Patients with known brain or CNS metastases are not
eligible.
- Patients who are receiving chemotherapy or hormone
therapy.
- Patients known to be HIV positive.
