Summary: RTOG 0522: A Randomized Phase III Trial of Concurrent Accelerated Radiation and Cisplatin Versus Concurrent Accelerated Radiation, Cisplatin, and Cetuximab (C225) Followed by Surgery for Selected Patients for Stage III and IV Head and Neck Carcinomas
You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have head and neck (oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx) squamous cell carcinoma of the (HNSCC). The purpose of this study is to compare standard treatment (radiation therapy and chemotherapy with cisplatin) to standard treatment plus Cetuximab (C225) in terms of effectiveness and side effects. This study will also do PET scans (a type of imaging study involving radiation) and take blood samples to study the effect of this treatment on head and neck cancer. Your treatment on this study is expected to last 6 to 7 weeks depending on which treatment you are assigned to receive. After treatment is over, your medical condition will be followed indefinitely.
