General Information

Prilosec (omeprazole) has been approved in a new dosage strength of 40 mg capsules. The drug is currently available in 10 mg and 20 mg capsules, and is an antisecretory compound for use as therapy for heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Side Effects

Side effects of Prilosec are reported to be usually transient and mild, and include diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Mechanism of Action

Prilosec the first in a class of antisecretory compounds known as proton pump inhibitors.
