Center Overview

Spartanburg Medical Research (SMR), a dedicated Phase I-IV research site, has conducted clinical trials since 1990. Located on a 2.6 acre wooded campus fronting Business I-85 opposite Spartanburg Technical College, SMR is only 20 minutes from Spartanburg/Greenville’s airport and 70 minutes from Charlotte’s airport and convenient to area hotels, and hospitals. SMR has undergone 4 FDA audits with no findings.

Charles M. Fogarty, MD, CPI

Medical Director:

Charles M. Fogarty, MD, CPI, has been in private practice in Spartanburg, South Carolina since 1978 and began conducting clinical trials in 1990. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease and he is a certified Principal Investigator.

He has also been Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at Spartanburg Technical College from 1985 to present. At Spartanburg Regional Medical Center he served as Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab from 1978-2000; Director of Respiratory therapy from 1980-2000; Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1994-2000; and was an IRB member from 1996-1999. He was President of the Spartanburg Medical Society from 1991-1992. He is listed in Best Doctors in America, and Marquis Who’s Who in Healthcare. He has been Principal Investigator in over 400 Phase I-IV trials.

Staff Expertise

Spartanburg Medical Research staff on average has been with SMR over 10 years. Our coordinators are ACLS certified and are recognized for their experience at area hospitals and for their community volunteer work.

Clinical Research Coordinators

  • Nicole Crockford, PA-C, CCRC has been working with SMR as a Sub-Investigator since 2004. Nicole has experience in working with in-patient pulmonary care/critical care as well as seeing patients at our affiliate Lung & Chest Medical Associates. Her research interests include Phase I through Phase IV studies in COPD.
  • Dale Cook, CPT, CCRC has been working with SMR since 1998. Her previous experience includes working in a histology laboratory. Her current research interests include working with adult and pediatric allergy, asthma, and eczema.
  • Jami Jones, ATC, CCRC has been with SMR since 2002. Her previous experience includes working as a certified athletic trainer and teaching German to high school students in the local area school district. Her research interests include COPD, Healthy Adult, Sarcopenia and Phase 1 trials.
  • Anita Morris, BSN, RN, CCRC has been with SMR since 1997. Her previous experience includes working as a cardiac care nurse at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Her current research interests include Phase 1 studies, COPD, and Osteoporosis
  • Sherry Yeisley, MS, CCRC has been with SMR since 1999. She is a graduate from Middle Tennessee State University where she completed her thesis on proteins involved in insulin sensitivity at Louisiana State University. Her research interests include COPD, Healthy Adult, Migraine, and Phase 1 trials.
  • Deanna Guest, BSN, RN, CCRC has been with SMR since 2006. Her previous experience is working at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center as a nurse in the emergency room and critical care departments. Her research experience includes Asthma, Device Studies, Hypertension, and Diabetes trials.
  • Diane Roberts, MLT, CCRC has been with SMR since 2001. She has 30 years' experience as a medical laboratory technician. Her research interests include Diabetes & Vaccine trials.
  • Connie McCauley, LPN, CCRC has been with SMR since 2005. She has 37 years of nursing experience. Her research interests include Back Pain, Diabetes, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Opioid Induced Constipation, and Vaccine trials.
  • Alison T. Fogarty, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, CCRC has been with SMR since 2006. Her research interest includes Pediatrics, GOUT, and Osteoporosis.
  • Charlie D. Fogarty, BA, CCRC has been with SMR since 2006. His previous experience includes designing/developing reporting software with Spartanburg Bone Density and Financial analysis in Management. His current research experience includes Asthma, COPD, Osteoporosis, and Arthritis.
  • Angela J. Rudasill, CPT, CRC has been with SMR since 2010. Her previous experience includes Medical Office work, transcription, and teaching. Her research interests include working with both adult and pediatric Asthma, Allergy, Vaccine, and Phase 1 trials.
  • Frances R. Jones, LPN has been with SMR since 2013. Her previous experience includes being a nurse in a variety of fields since 1973 and teaching prenatal classes. She currently is recognized for her volunteer work in the community and conducts all community outreach for SMR.

Radiology:

  • Jodi Sanders, RTR, CDT, PBT (ASCP)CM, CCRC has been with SMR since 2000. Her previous experience includes working as a radiology technologist since 1984 and performing bone density scans since 2000. Her current research interests include working with adult and pediatric allergy, asthma, and eczema.

Respiratory Therapy:

  • Darla Brown, RRT, RCP has helped out on studies since 2008. Her experience includes Respiratory Therapy since 1986. She has an active status with the SC state Licensure for Respiratory Care Practitioners and she currently serves as office manager at a pulmonary private practice. She is a member of the American Association for Respiratory Care.

Laboratory Coordinator:

  • Christy Sharp, PBT (ASCP) CM, CCRC has worked with SMR since 2004. She previously worked at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center laboratory. She currently oversees the laboratory department.
  • Lynne Sarkisian, CPT has been with SMR since 2006. Her previous experience includes Milliken Research and Merrill Lynch stock market firm. She presently works as the lab coordinator at SMR.

Their Lab duties include: serial PK collection and processing, sputum processing, PPD administration and review, IV placement, certified IATA specimen shipping, OSHA coordinator(s), and proficient in using I-STAT monitor.

Regulatory Affair Coordinators

  • Angie Williams, BS, CCRP has been with SMR since 1997. Prior to joining the SMR team she graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.
  • Tessa M. Wilson, PBT (ASCP)CM, CCRP has been with SMR since 2005. Her previous work experience included Pediatrics for 9 years.

Their duties include: Receiving, completing, and submitting interest questionnaires, initial and ongoing regulatory document preparation, local and central IRB submissions(initial documents, SAE’s, protocol deviations, continuing review reports, ad materials, etc. ), maintenance of regulatory binders, budget and contract negotiations, sponsor and FDA audit preparations, monitor scheduling, travel scheduling, all study closure responsibilities, corresponding with Sponsors, CROs, IRBs, DEA, & FDA, CV & licensure updates, Site and study specific advertising, SOP maintenance, document storage preparations and shipment, social committee, and assist with subject visits and in the lab department when needed.

Administrative Staff

  • Martha Rost, AA has been with SMR since 1992. Her duties include payroll, tax and accounting. Martha has more than 40 years of experience in public and private accounting and has served as a consultant with physician groups since 1990
  • Melissa Seiler, BA has been with SMR since 2004. She currently is the EDC coordinator at SMR with duties that include CRF completion and maintenance for ongoing studies, source review and source creation.
  • Jan B. Turner, BS, PBT (ASCP)CM has been with SMR since 2005. Her duties include accounting scheduling, EDC, and front desk duties.
  • Harlee Swann has been with SMR since August 2016. She is a 2014 graduate of Chesnee High School and currently attends University of South Carolina Upstate. Her duties include: front desk responsibilities, scanning of all sources and medical records, and assist where needed with other office duties.
