Center Overview

Carle Clinic Association is a multi-specialty group practice that has been providing health care services to its communities for nearly 75 years. One of the largest private physician groups in the United States, Carle Clinic Association is comprised of 2,000 healthcare employees and more than 300 physicians practicing in more than 50 medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle Clinic serves a region throughout East Central Illinois and western Indiana, spanning over 32 counties and 1.2 million lives.

Of the clinic’s 300 physicians, approximately 60 percent are specialists; the remaining 40 percent are primary care physicians. Carle Clinic providers treat up to 3,000 patients daily and primary care providers manage a patient-base of 167,677 lives. The clinic has an active patient base of over 315,000 patients.

In 2005, Health Alliance Medical Plans was rated number one in the United States for “Rating of all Healthcare,” as determined by a national survey developed jointly by the Agency for HealthCare Research and Quality and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Health Alliance Medical Plans also earned the 2005 rating of 11th in the United States for “Rating of Health Plan” among 252 participating healthcare plans.

Clinical Research Experience

The Carle Cancer Center is a nationally recognized cancer center providing communities throughout East Central Illinois and western Indiana with the most advanced cancer treatments available. The Carle Cancer Center has participated in cancer research for over 20 years, and in 1983, was one of the first community cancer facilities in the United States to be designated as a Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). Through this designation, the Carle Cancer Center is linked directly with the National Cancer Institute's research endeavors.

The Carle Heart Center has been nationally recognized as one of the “100 Best” cardiology programs. Investigators have been active in research in cardiac arrhythmias.

Medical Director – David Graham, MD

  • David Graham, MD, medical director for clinical research at Carle Clinic Association served as president of the medical staff at Carle Foundation Hospital and head of Carle Clinic’s Cancer Center. Dr. Graham not only dedicates his expertise to Carle Clinic’s proactive involvement in clinical trial endeavors, he also interprets clinical research for the United States Department of Defense.
  • Dr. Graham earned his MD from Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota and is Board Certified in the American Board of Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology. His medical specialties include gastrointestinal tumors, hematological malignancies and prostate cancer.
