The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) in the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern VA Medical School is a full-time, designated unit that provides all aspects of support for pediatric clinical research from industry trials to investigator-initiated studies.
The CRU is the result of a merger of Monarch Medical Research and the Center for Pediatric Research (CPR), both of which have had long and successful track records in pediatric research in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. The Center for Pediatric Research and Monarch Medical Research conducted hundreds of hospital- and community-based trials with federal and industry sponsorship. These two research centers merged in July 2007, becoming the Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Eastern Virginia Medical School. We have experienced enthusiastic participation, subject recruitment and retention.
We support investigators at two sites that include examination rooms, on-site physician investigators, and a full complement of clinical research coordinators, regulatory and contract/budget support. Our experienced team provides rapid protocol review and study initiation. Trials are conducted with over 60 pediatric generalists and sub-specialists in most major therapeutic areas who are affiliated with the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, a 146-bed acute care hospital with over 78,000 outpatient visits and 33,000 emergency visits annually, and the only free-standing pediatric hospital in Virginia. Our research facilities are fully equipped with the most current communication and research technologies.
The Pediatrics Clinical Research Unit is affiliated with both general and pediatric subspecialty groups in the area’s only free standing tertiary children’s hospital, providing access to a wide range of primary and subspecialties. We have many well-seasoned investigators who have a track record of mentoring and grooming our junior investigators.
Using standard operating procedures, the Pediatrics CRU is able to efficiently support clinical trials from study design, budgeting and institutional review board (IRB) submission through subject enrollment and follow-up. Our clinical research coordinators and regulatory support personnel are specialists and well trained in pediatric clinical trials to include Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification, human subjects’ protections, and hazardous materials shipping (IATA).
