The Tucson Orthopaedic Research Foundation was created in 1995 so that the physicians could participate in clinical research, develop projects and assess outcomes. Research has been undertaken in clinical studies related to orthopaedics including pain management, blood problems, soft tissue injuries, and postoperative care. In 2001 the Foundation’s mission was expanded and renamed the Tucson Orthopaedic Research Center.
The new Tucson Orthopaedic Research Center (TORC) is a multi-specialty investigative research facility dedicated to conducting clinical research trials efficiently and at the highest level of quality.
Tucson Orthopaedic Research Center is a division of the Tucson Orthopaedic Institute (TOI), which includes 37 practicing orthopaedic surgeons. Tucson Orthopaedic Institute operates five Tucson clinics: Tucson Orthopaedic Institute @ Tucson Medical Center (TOI/TMC), Tucson Orthopaedic Institute @ Northwest Medical Center (TOI/NW) and Tucson Orthopaedic Institute @ OroValley (TOI/OV), St Mary’s and Green Valley Office. . TOI participates with the Tucson Medical Center in the operation of 2 bay day surgery clinic located in the within the Institute’s building. A new TOI Spine Center is now open.
Orthopaedic Clinical trials are completed in 2 hospitals and five clinics: Tucson Medical Center, , Northwest Hospital, and at the five Tucson Orthopaedic Institute clinics. The center also cooperates with research services of investigators who are board certified in Rheumatology, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Neurology, Gynecology, Gastroenterology, among others.
Our Orthopaedic practice has five locations in Tucson: TOI Northeast, TOI Northwest, TOI OroValley, St. Mary’s and Green Valley Office. The Northeast facility is housed in 87,000 sq. ft to accommodate our 27 orthopaedic surgeons, and includes six operating rooms, DEXA Scan, MRI, X-Ray, special procedure rooms, cast rooms, over 50 exam rooms, physical therapy with a pool, library, conference room, meeting room (for more than 200 people), and spacious waiting rooms. There is a physical therapist, podiatrist, an occupational medicine specialist and 7 PA’s employed by TOI.
The Research Headquarters (TORC) is located on the second floor. Within our facility there are 3 patient rooms, conference room, work area for CRA’s and monitors, secure record and medication storage, a freezer (-20° F), a dedicated refrigerator, fax, copier, numerous telephone lines, Internet access, a state-of-the-art computer system, centrifuge, and phlebotomy.
The TOI Northwest facility is housed in 17,500 sq.ft., with four orthopaedic surgeons on staff, 35 exam rooms, four cast rooms, and a conference room. The TOI Oro Valley has five orthopaedic surgeons on staff to assist patients with their needs.
In addition to three locations around Tucson, Tucson Orthopaedic
Insitute is home to a training venue for surgeons from all over the
U.S. to attend. This surgery training facility encompasses 5600
square feet, including a conference area (to hold 40), bio-skills
laboratory, and is equipped for multimedia and teleconferencing
use. For more info about the surgical training center, refer to our
home website at www.tucsonortho.com.

For more information about a particular member of the research
group, please, refer to our home web site
www.tucsonortho.com. Also, TORC employs
research services of investigators who are board-certified or
board-eligible in the area of our clinical research interest.
Metropolitan Tucson is home to more than 1,000,000 permanent residents. During the winter months, the estimated population increases to more than 1,200,000 because of the deep, southwest pocket location and superb climate. TORC is conveniently located inside TOI, adjacent to TMC, and is a less than a half hour’s drive from Tucson International airport. Tucson is a highly diverse community with an extensive population of seniors, college students, and minority groups. Our comprehensive in-house patient database is continually expanding with more than 30,000 active charts.
