Springfield Clinic is one of the largest multi-specialty physician groups located in Central Illinois, with nearly 21 locations throughout a 13 county region. The Clinic’s medical staff encompasses over 180 board-certified physicians, practicing in 30 different specialties, and over 80 mid-level providers, with a broad range of training and expertise.

Clinical Research Experience

With more than 80 years of combined experience in clinical trials and a patient population of over 1 million, our investigators and staff are dedicated to conducting Cutting Edge Research for Tomorrow’s Medicine.” Since being centralized in 2003, the Department of Research has coordinated all research endeavors at the Clinic, having completed over 300 studies (Phase I-IV). The Department is currently staffed with a Director of Research, who is supported by research managers, study coordinators, a recruitment coordinator, and a regulatory specialist.

Research staff are trained on ICH/GCP guidelines, HIPAA, and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Certifications include: Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI), International Air Transport Association (IATA) training, and Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). Regulatory oversight can be provided by either local (inpatient) or central (outpatient) IRBs. Research facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories and radiological services, an outpatient surgery center, inpatient services at two area hospitals, and electronic medical records.

Springfield Clinic Department of Research and its physician investigators have interest and experience in conducting trials for indications such as asthma, COPD, urticaria, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, infectious diseases (complicated skin and skin structure infections, hepatitis C, sepsis syndrome, fungal infections, diabetic foot infections, pneumonia), herpes zoster/shingles, breast cancer, prostate cancer,,head and neck cancer, atrial fibrillation, erectile dysfunction, overactive bladder, neurological disorders, diabetes mellitus, psoriasis, actinic keratoses, women’s health issues, macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, joint implants, breast implants, and occupational health issues. New investigative areas are continually being considered and added.

Facility Description

Our state-of-the-art center is experienced with conducting both inpatient and outpatient trials. The main clinic is located one mile from St. John’s Hospital, which has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the 50 best cancer hospitals in the nation. We are also located less than 2 miles from Memorial Medical Center, which has achieved Magnet Recognition Status for Nursing Excellence. Springfield Clinic is accredited by Accreditation

Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) receiving the highest marks and accreditation term allowed by that organization. The laboratory at Springfield Clinic is CAP and CLIA certified and full digital radiology service including CAT scan and MRI are available.

Springfield Clinic has a dedicated research staff. The department is led by a Director of Research, who oversees the departmental activities, as well as seeks new projects. The Director is supported by a Research Business Manager, a Clinical Research Manager, 6 Study Coordinators, a Recruitment Coordinator, and a Regulatory Support Specialist. The facility has a dedicated monitoring room equipped with both telephone and Internet access. A copy and fax machine are also available for monitoring activities.

Other Information

Local Commercial IRB provides 10-14 day turnaround from protocol submission to approval. Local IRB (50 mile radius) is required for all in patient protocols. Out patient protocols can utilize the services of a central IRB.
