Research Center Profile:
Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates, Inc.
Immunology/Infectious Diseases
Pulmonary/Respiratory Diseases
Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates is a private practice of six
physicians and three nurse practitioners providing all aspects of
pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine to the central Virginia
region. The service area is populated by 190,000 people in a
five-county region served by two hospitals united under a single
health care system. Our practice spans the range of care from
critical care and acute care services to sleep disorders,
interventional bronchoscopy and to a busy outpatient practice.
Incorporating clinical research gives our patients access to
therapeutic alternatives that might not otherwise be available to
them and enhances the quality of care we provide.
Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates has been involved in clinical
research since 1998. Several of our physicians were involved in
clinical research in academic centers prior to that time. We have
clinical trial experience in the areas of sepsis, pneumonia
(nosocomial and community-acquired), asthma therapy, chronic
obstructive lung diseases, DVT prophylaxis and restless leg
syndrom. As medical directors of a well-organized intensive care
service, a nutrition support team, a sleep lab, and a pulmonary
rehabilitation center our site is well equipped for clinical
research in those fields. We have been involved in clinical trials
with Bristol Myers Squibb, Lilly, Aventis, GSK, Altana, Bayer and
Boehringer Ingelheim.
Located in the heart of central Virginia, Lynchburg is easily
accessible by car or by air. Our office is located near Lynchburg
General Hospital and is equipped for pulmonary function testing and
diagnostic chest radiography. The facilities of our hospital system
offer complete laboratory radiology and cardiorespiratory
diagnostic services. Clinical research may be conducted in our
office or in the facilities of Centra Health, our community’s
hospital system comprised of about 587 beds (66 ICU beds) in
Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals.

Our service area is a five-county region in the heart of central
Virginia populated by 190,000 people, with a diverse economy
focused on manufacturing and service industries. The prevalence of
cigarette smoking is about 30% among adults in central Virginia,
and the prevalence of lung diseases is high.
Our site uses the Centra Health IRB for studies that recruit
inpatients or that use Centra facilities, but we can also work with
a central IRB for outpatient-only clinical trials.
