The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center (UKCMC) is one the nation’s finest academic health care
centers. Its vision is to be a Top-20 academic health center recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in teaching, research and patient care - Top 10 Business Plan.
The University of Kentucky is achieving outstanding success in the competitive arena of research grants & contracts (see Research statistics and national rankings). Major research areas include Aging, Behavioral Health, Cancer, Drug Evaluation, Infection and
Immunity, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Surgery, Neurosciences, Spinal Cord Injuries, and Women's Health.
Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS): Established by the Board of Trustees as a University-wide center in September 2007, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) at the University of Kentucky (UK) is leading the alignment of UK’s ongoing transformation of its entire clinical and translational research enterprise with the goals of the NIH Roadmap Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). The overall goal of the CCTS is to accelerate the translation of basic science advances to tangible improvements in the public’s health, addressed in four specific aims:
Specific Aim 1: Enhance and develop new outreach pathways to confront chronic health issues in rural Appalachia, ensuring that our research addresses community concerns and that the community benefits from our findings.
Specific Aim 2: Develop the clinical and translational research programs of the future using innovative methods to champion collaborative team science.
Specific Aim 3: Enhance existing educational pathways and develop novel methods to educate and excite the next generation of collaborative clinical and translational scientists.
Specific Aim 4Strengthen the development of biomedical informatics and novel methodologies through improved cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The CCTS now encompasses the Clinical Research Development and Operations Center (CR-DOC), which resulted from the integration of the former UK Clinical Research Organization (UKCRO) and UK’s General Clinical Research Center
(GCRC). Along with eight other key functions, CR-DOC provides a centralized infrastructure consisting of key
core facilities and services to help investigators, clinicians, and scholars from across the University and the Commonwealth of Kentucky to access much needed resources to become educated on the conduct of clinical research, and to afford them mechanisms to access a gamut of support services needed for the conduct of high quality clinical and translational research. These services do not end at the boundaries of the University of Kentucky campus, but reach across the Commonwealth engaging greater partnership between the communities, industry, and the
University. Information on the CCTS Web site details the core facilities housed within the CCTS, with links to other services -www.ccts.uky.edu.

The CR-DOC is conveniently located on the floor of UKMC, this 3,985 square foot facility provides ample space to conduct outpatient trials and short-term pharmacokinetic studies. (CR-DOC) also occupies 5,954 square foot of space in the newly remodeled Research Inpatient Clinic on the 5th floor of the hospital. These two centers along with the Delta Dental of Kentucky Clinical Research Center (DDKCRC) will build on the past success to become all encompassing service center -The Clinical Research Development and Operations Center (CR-DOC) through the Center for Clinical Translational Science (CCTS). These facilities resources are available to all clinical investigators throughout the University.

The UK Medical Center is supported by more than 500 faculty physicians and dentists, 517 resident physicians and a staff of 3,200 health professionals committed to high-quality patient care. It has created an appealing environment to attract, reward and retain outstanding, multi-disciplinary clinical research personnel. Coordinator certification serves as a means of advancement. More than 75% of the currently employed Clinical Research Coordinators and Clinical Research Associates are certified, with many others in the process of obtaining certification. Proactive educational and training series are offered to ensure staff knowledge, skills and compliance with good clinical practice guidelines.
Kentucky has a population of 4,339,367. The UK Chandler Medical
Center provides health care to residents of all (120) Kentucky
counties and surrounding states,
(Kentucky and Regional Demographics). Much of
the regional area is rural and consists of stable, non-transient
people, with a high incidence of major chronic diseases. Patient
contacts for 1998 included more than 20,000 admissions, 35,000
emergency department visits, and 368,000 outpatient visits. Disease
demographics may be readily obtained for determination of potential
subject pools.
