The McGuire Research Institute is a non-profit organization
associated with the Richmond Veterans Administration Medical
Center--a 500-bed tertiary referral hospital. The Institute
complements the care of patients by enhancing the intellectual
viability of their clinics and offers new innovative treatment
alternatives to their patients. In addition, McGuire Research
Institute supports basic science investigator-initiated
research.
The McGuire Research Institute supports investigators with
faculty appointments who conduct inpatient and outpatient
Pre-clinical, Phase I, II, III, and IV trials and outcomes
research. MRI has an annual revenue of $3.5 million in privately
funded (CRO, pharmaceutical and biotech companies) trials. Since
incorporating in 1989 MRI has received over $70,000,000 in research
funding. Currently 70 investigators are conducting 170
projects.
The McGuire Research Institute supports studies in a variety of

The McGuire Research Institute has worked with a variety of sponsors including, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bayer Healthcare, Eli Lilly, Glaxo, Amylin, Axio, Celgene, Covance, Gilead, Kendle, Johnson and Johnson, Medtronic, Merck, Novartis, Salix , Medpace, Pfizer, Quintiles, Roche, Schering-Plough and many others.
The McGuire Research Institute offers comprehensive research
services including:
- Experienced physician investigators and nurse coordinators with
in-house resource support
- Consultation in all medical and surgical specialties
- Laboratory, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine support
- A computerized Patient Data Management System that tracks
research subjects and facilitates outcomes studies
- Doing the little things like double checking addition on
subject data forms to minimize sponsor site visit time
- Careful assessment of our capabilities - we will not accept a
study if we do not have the expertise or patients necessary
- IRB meetings weekly
