Loyola University Health System (LUHS) is a private, Catholic-Jesuit provider based in the western suburbs of Chicago and is a nationally recognized leader in providing specialty and primary health-care services. Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC), located on a 61-acre campus in Maywood, Ill., includes Loyola University Hospital, a 569-licensed-bed facility that houses a Level 1 Trauma Center,
a Burn Center and the Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center. Also on this campus are the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, Ryan Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine, Loyola Outpatient Center and Oral Health Center, as well as the LUC Stritch School of Medicine, LUC Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and Loyola Center for Fitness. The Health System also includes the 36-acre Melrose Park campus, which includes the 264-bed Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, Marjorie G. Weinberg Cancer Care Center and Gottlieb Center for Fitness, as well as an extensive network of primary and specialty care centers conveniently located in Cook, DuPage and Will counties.
Loyola University Health System has contributed to clinical research since 1972. Loyola has worked with pharmaceutical, biotech companies and device manufacturers. Areas of prior and current industry-partner studies include cardiac devices, surgical devices, HIV, antifungals and antibiotics, DVT, PE, CMV, solid organ transplant, rheumatology, dermatology, ADHD, ENT, asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Together, they are the driving force for Loyola’s translational research – discoveries made in the laboratory that are translated into new treatments and solutions that can help restore patients to their active lifestyles.
A leading academic medical center, Loyola offers a number of medical research studies at any given time. Research is key to finding out which new treatments work and why. It contributes new knowledge about disease and medical conditions. Research studies are underway in a variety of key areas, from vaccines for treating advanced malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, to new treatments for angina, heart attack, heart failure and heart transplantation. Loyola’s clinical researchers also are recognized nationally for pioneering cancer research and treatment programs using umbilical cord blood stem cell and bone marrow transplantation.
The Stritch School of Medicine’s active research laboratories are located in six research institutes that support Loyola’s integrated approach to patient care, research and education. The Burn & Shock/Trauma, Cardiovascular, Infectious Disease & Immunology, Neuroscience, Oncology and Signal Transduction institutes allow researchers and health-care professionals to connect and move quickly toward new approaches to prevent and treat disease.
Institutional Review Board
The Loyola IRB is compliant with all relevant regulatory guidelines while conducting reviews in a streamlined and efficient manner. This allows appropriately prepared applications to receive full approval within four weeks. The Loyola Federal Wide Assurance letter covers research at both Loyola and Gottlieb hospitals.
